Gentle giant

 photo IMG_7007_zpsd287390d.jpg
This big beautiful crane fly didn't even move when I put my hand next to it for scale. These are totally harmless gentle creatures that inspire irrational fear and hatred.

BUT THEY FLY AT YOUR FAAAACE!!! (say my friends who are scared of them)

I like 'em. My dad sings a nice song about them (which I'm sure I've told you before).

Welp, definitely thought those were mosquitoes. My cats like to eat them.

As did I until I found out. There are stories that they catch and eat mosquitoes but it ain't so. Adults don't even eat.

Jeez, what kind of mosquitoes do ye have over there? The ones in Europe are tiny. Still nasty though,

Is -that- what those are? We always called them "skeeter eaters" in Hawaii (despite having no proof that they did anything of the sort), and in that hazy "my family has a name for them and that's good enough" way, I never knew what those creatures were really called.

If only they did. Some species have larvae that can be aquatic predators of mosquito larvae, so there's some truth to it.
