The poetry of weeds

dandelion
I got an email this week: "today I published a poem inspired by one of the photographs in your blog"

Chicory at Castle Island

For now,
the powder blue flower
frisks
in the cool wind
and lingers
at salt water’s edge,
reclaiming the sand
for plants.

Pretty sure those photos are by Alexis, at least the better, second one. They are from this post about chicory, part of the 365 species project.

The poem was published on Jellyfish Whispers, and the poet is Marianne Szlyk.

No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -
No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day.
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member -
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -
November!

I refreshed several times to get ones I liked. It goes together as a story poem about my life, my wife, my family:

seldom see on this
day in 365 urban species
bird's nest fungus

and expensive from
a predatory earthworm
like animal june

i read about the
whole plant is toxic to
some swooning woman

as i like that is
to prove it she sent me a
good time a great place

with pretty strong winds
fortunately alexis
and i thank you all

me and my dad's
house tomorrow afternoon
it will be enough

...........

And a little something for soylent_screen fans

i recommended

I know some of you are interested in poetry, and all of you, if you are reading this blog, are interested in interactions between humans and other aspects of the natural world.  That is why I direct your attention to Hawk and Whippoorwill, a new (reborn?) magazine 'devoted to poems of man and nature.'  It's a real magazine, made of paper and such, so you have to order an issue or subscribe to read it.  There is also information on the website for those of you who would like to submit your own poems.
