Tell me why

So suppose you found this--a small gray feather marred by blood, all alone on the undisturbed snow. What do you think is going on? What do you do next?

Answer: Look up.

I watched this red-tail long enough to decide it was probably a pigeon it was plucking. I shot a couple videos, and to my great annoyance I can't seem to embed them in LiveJournal. You'll have to watch them in a separate browser tab:

That's a great photo! I watched a red-tailed hawk pluck what I think was a black-capped chickadee out of the holly bush and proceed to eat it in the pine tree. I watched for about half an hour. I never got out to the base of the tree, though, to verify what kind of feathers floated down.

A hawk got a bird. Happens in my yard regularly. :-< I feel guilty, putting out seed, which only lures them to the killing ground. I guess the hawk has to eat too.
